IMOCA Open 60 Vendee Globe 2016/17 Day 29, Alan Roura SUI
Much action at the Vendée yesterday on the southern oceans: The leader Armel Le Cléac'h FRA rounded Cape Leeuwin on the southwest point of Australia after 28 days and 5 hours smashing the existing record of François Gabart FRA established 4 years ago by 5 days ! Alex Thompson GBR, 81 nm behind Le Cléach'h this morning, remained also far below the old mark. Problems however for the 3rd-ranked Sébastien Josse FRA: One of the foil appendages did not stand the continuous stress a broke partly off. He is now examining if and how an adequate repair is possible. Even worse was the incident of Romain Attanasio FRA sailing in the closely packed mid-fleet, who damaged both rudders in a collision with flotsam. He is now on the way to South Africa to try to repair the Open60 in a sheltered bay. Alan Roura SUI is still in a duel with Edna O'Coineen IRL for the 21st rank. This morning, he was 18 nm behind. Both will move up one position with Attanasio stopping for repairs.
